Eyestrain Headaches at Work

Your body will let you know if you are overstraining your eyes. Common symptoms of eyestrain include:

  • Blurred vision

  • Double vision

  • Neck pain

  • Eye twitching

  • Dizziness

  • Dry eyes

  • Eye discomfort such as itchiness or burning

  • Headaches

There are many causes of eyestrain and related headaches at work. Both problems can be triggered by:

  • Poor lighting

  • Improper monitor placement

  • Neck strain from cradling a phone

  • Lack of rest breaks

  • Poor posture

  • Stress

  • Lack of sleep or lack of food

  • An underlying vision problem, such as glaucoma

If you experiencing eye fatigue or eyestrain headaches while working at a computer, here is a great trick to reduce eyestrain:

Hang a picture directly in front of your workspace. The picture needs to have some depth to it… a horizon or a path or road leading off into the distance. Every half hour or so, move your gaze from your monitor to the picture.

Periodically changing your visual focus from near to far will give eye muscles a needed rest and reduce overuse problems.

Just like all the other muscles in the body, the eye muscles are susceptible to repetitive strain injuries. Staring at a computer monitor for 8 hours a day without taking breaks and occasionally changing your visual focus can lead to eyestrain, eye fatigue or headache.
